Elected in December 2019, I am proud to represent the people of East Surrey as your Member of Parliament. My parents came to this country in the ‘70s with just £100 between them. Growing up, I watched them work in the NHS, and I hope to serve my community in the same spirit as a good family doctor. I want to be accessible as possible, and I’m here to listen to your problems and solve them as best I can.
I studied Maths and Philosophy at university and worked in emerging markets in the City at the beginning of my career. However, early on, I decided to follow my heart and work on social justice policy. I spent five years working on a range of domestic policy – from education and financial inclusion to the regeneration of Britain’s most deprived communities – before I was approached to work as a Special Adviser to the then-Chief Secretary to the Treasury, Rishi Sunak. I’m pleased to be working with him again in my current role as Parliamentary Private Secretary to HM Treasury.
My local priorities include fixing our roads, supporting the local economy, and protecting our environment. In June 2020, I set up the East of Surrey Local Economic Taskforce with my neighbour Crispin Blunt MP to bring decision-makers across Surrey together to drive East Surrey’s economic strategy. I was appointed to the Surrey Growth Board in July, and I sit on the advisory board for the think tank Onward and on Policy Exchange’s Indo Pacific Commission to promote how Britain can best work with the fastest-growing region in the world.
